ABC Cares: Building Stronger Communities Through Service and Workforce Development

At ABC Greater Houston, we believe our responsibility extends beyond the projects we build. Through ABC Cares, our chapter is committed to strengthening our communities by investing in people, supporting local organizations, and inspiring the next generation of construction professionals.

ABC Cares is a national Associated Builders and Contractors initiative that encourages chapters and member companies to make a meaningful impact through volunteerism, workforce development, and community service. Here in Greater Houston, we’re proud to put those values into action through several exciting initiatives this year.

Building the Future Starts Early

One of our signature ABC Cares initiatives is introducing young people to rewarding careers in the construction industry.

On Saturday, October 10, 2026, the Construction & Maintenance Education Foundation (CMEF) will host its annual Scouting America Merit Badge Day at the CMEF Training Center in La Porte. This hands-on event gives Scouts the opportunity to earn merit badges while learning directly from construction professionals in a real-world training environment.

Participants will have the opportunity to work toward earning merit badges in:

  • Electricity
  • Plumbing
  • Safety

Prior to the event, Scouts are encouraged to read the applicable merit badge pamphlets and complete prerequisite assignments. Electricity participants should bring a copy of a household electric bill and a photo of their home’s electric meter to complete portions of the badge requirements. Study guides and instructional videos are also available to help Scouts prepare before arriving.

By introducing young people to the skilled trades through engaging, hands-on experiences, ABC Greater Houston and CMEF are helping spark interest in construction careers while developing tomorrow’s workforce.

More Than Community Service

ABC Cares also includes a variety of service projects throughout the year that allow our members to give back to the communities where we live and work.

This year’s initiatives include:

  • Hearts with Hope Community Day – Bringing together volunteers to support local nonprofit organizations and families in need.
  • Building Hope Through Smiles – Partnering with community organizations to provide encouragement, resources, and support to children and families.
  • ABC Carnival & CMEF Career in Construction Expo – Combining workforce development with family fun by introducing students and parents to careers in construction before hosting an afternoon of community celebration.
  • Veteran Workforce Partnerships – Working alongside organizations such as NextOp to connect transitioning service members and veterans with meaningful careers in the construction industry.

Building More Than Buildings

Every volunteer project, every career expo, every merit badge earned, and every hour of service reflects what ABC Greater Houston stands for. Our members don’t simply build offices, schools, hospitals, and industrial facilities; they build opportunities, strengthen communities, and invest in the next generation.

We invite every member company to participate in an upcoming ABC Cares initiative. Together, we can continue making a lasting impact throughout Greater Houston while demonstrating the positive difference the merit shop construction industry makes every day.

Together, we’re building stronger communities—one project, one volunteer, and one future construction professional at a time.
