The ABC | CMEF Workforce Development Committee officially kicked off its work on
Wednesday, February 4, 2026, with a strong showing of leadership, partners, and
industry stakeholders. Chaired by Carla Thompson of Turner Industries, the inaugural
meeting drew more than 25 attendees, including CMEF’s Board of Trustee Chair Rusty
Barnhill of Force Corp. and representatives from community colleges, workforce
development organizations, and partners such as NextOp—a clear signal of the
momentum behind this effort.
The committee is dedicated to advancing construction workforce education by
expanding awareness, access, and clear career pathways into commercial and
industrial construction. Through collaboration with public schools, community colleges,
training providers, and industry partners, the group is focused on building a skilled,
safety-focused, and job-ready workforce equipped to meet both current and future
industry demands. By actively engaging educators, students, and contractors, the
committee promotes craft training, career exploration, and professional development
opportunities that empower individuals to succeed in the skilled trades.
A key priority of the committee is intentional alignment between CMEF and ABC,
particularly through increased involvement with commercial contractors. This approach
ensures both organizations are working toward shared workforce goals, maximizing
resources, and delivering greater value to members and the industry as a whole.
Early initiatives are already underway. ABC Draft Day, a student hiring event scheduled
for March 27, will serve as a signing-day style experience for CTE seniors, connecting
them directly with contractors for potential employment. The pilot year includes two
school districts and targets 50–100 students, with increased contractor participation
needed for booths and résumé reviews. The committee is also addressing logistical
challenges, such as student application and email access, to ensure smooth
participation.
Additionally, the committee is supporting the “She Builds / We Build” High School
Engagement Event on March 19–20 in Channelview. This two-day event aims to
introduce thousands of students to construction careers—Day 1 focusing on 11th and
12th grade girls with a goal of 2,000 attendees, and Day 2 welcoming 7th–12th grade
boys and girls with a goal of 1,000 attendees. With the event coinciding with the
National Craft Competition, coordination and additional vendors and exhibitors will be
critical to its success.
Together, these efforts reflect a strong, collaborative start for the Workforce
Development Committee—one grounded in partnership, driven by industry needs, and
focused on building the next generation of construction professionals.
